Helping Seniors With Their Stuff: Part 2

Just Get Rid of It: Freecycle.com

In addition to helping seniors move, Rose’s Daughters are experts in helping organize, clear, clean and stage the senior’s home for sale.   Seniors often want to find good homes for the items they are shedding.   Here’s a good option for getting rid of stuff.

The Freecycle website (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycleTC/ can be helpful for seniors who are internet users or have friends or relatives who can go online for them.  The Internet user can give items away by using Freecycle, a website that connects the giver with the receiver:

  • The owner of the item posts a description of the item being given away and interested people respond in email, offering to take it.
  • The owner selects the recipient and arranges the pickup time and location of the item. The hand off of the item can remain somewhat anonymous, even to having it picked up at the end of the driveway at an agreed upon time.
  • Anything can be given away.  The senior might find a happy recipient for the closet of quilting scraps, knitting magazines, a pile of concrete block or sections of chain link fence.
