Helping Seniors With Their Stuff: Part 3

What to Know About Donating to Charities
In addition to helping seniors move, Rose’s Daughters are experts in helping organize, clear, clean and stage the senior’s home for sale. Donating items to charity is an excellent way to help a senior downsize or get ready for a move. This is what we know about donating items to charity:
- Charities accept items in good condition. Clothing needs to be cleaned and not stained. Furniture also needs to be reasonably clean and not show signs of pet wear, odor or hair.
- Some charities will pick up but most charities have restrictions about what items they will accept, so call and find out what the restrictions are. Even when a charity will pick up at the home, they may have requirements: some will not come into the house; some will not go up or down stairs; some will want the items curbside.
- Locate charities that accept donations in the Yellow Pages under “Charitable Organizations”.
- If the senior is moving, the movers can load the items for donation on the truck and make a drop of those items to an accepting charity on the day of the move.
- Difficult items to donate are: electric organs; any refrigerator or freezer; encyclopedias; sleeper sofas. These often require junk hauling and incur fees for the disposal.
